Charcoal on paper. Unfortunately, I was poor at the time, and couldn't afford the really big sheets, so this is four pieces of 18 inch by 24 inch drawing paper taped together on the back. Doing the math, that comes out to 36 inch by 48 inch, or 3 foot by 4 foot. This is BIG, for charcoal. But it did leave the lines where the pieces connect faintly visible. Ah, well. It was done some time in 1996 or 1997, I think, though I wasn't thinking when I put the mark on the image, and put on this year. *L*

Update: I finally got around to cleaning this up in Photoshop. I removed the join-lines of the pieces of paper, and increased the contrast a bit, that sort of thing.

This is awesome! I really like the concept, it's so intriguing... The shading is well done and something about the whole thing just really appeals to me. Great job!

That's really cool! I love that maple leaf, and the integration with the clock is really clever. I've never done any work with charcoal before, but after seeing this I am inspired to try it!

I loved working with it. Very messy though! *L* Don't try it heavy like this over carpet, or anything important. Outside, or in a garage, or such is best. I did this in an art class at university, so I had the advantage of large well-lighted rooms with easels where it doesn't matter if you mess up the floors. *L* Also, you will need to spray your work with a fixative when you are done with it, so it doesn't come off on everything. Basic un-fancy hair-spray will do, if you can't afford proper fixative. *L* For me, charcoal is like sculpting clay, both additive and subtractive, which was one of the big appeals of it. You have to not be afraid to get dirty though.

:jawdrop: Oh wow. This is awesome! I'd love to try charcoal out some day but for now I'll just admire yours!

i'm horrible with charcoal, i get more on my palms and forearms than i do on the paper.

This inspires me to never use charcoal again

but in a good way, because i don't think i'd ever get to this level
:iconeolhin:
*L* Palms and forearms were the least of it. When working dark like this I would get it on my glasses, in my hair, on my face, essentially anything at all that I touched in the many hours of working on it. *L*

Thank you. :) I just wish I could work in charcoal still, but it is too messy for a small apartment, unfortunately.
