Artist's Comments

Two elements, normally seen as opposing, combined in one form. Earth and Air, Tree and Sky, low and high. The duality of nature.

The tree has five primary branches, holding up the bowl of the sky. It is Earth, shaped by Water and Air, and bound into its final form by Fire. The act of creating it, and the thought and energy that went into it form the fifth element of Ether. The final form can also be seen to represent Winter, from the bare branches.

Five different views of the same hand built ceramic chalice. Fired to cone 10. I also formulated the waxy deep blue opaque glaze that I used for the sky here.

Several people have asked that I post some of my ceramics. Most of it is packed up in storage, but this piece is more available (being on Mother’s alter), so I photographed it, and here it is.

Entered in the Duality Contest commemorating the founding of :icondapagan:.

Ohh, that's really pretty, reminds me of a describing of a grailholder from a book, the difference is this one isn't gold :P

Thank you. :) Gold would be a bit too expensive for me to work in, at least enough to make a chalice out of would be! Clay is more reasonably priced, though the cobalt oxide for the blue glaze was a bit pricey. ;) Besides, I like the elemental significance of how clay transforms into ceramic.

I love your avatar, if I didn't tell you that already. :)

Well yeah, gold is a tad pricey, and you can make your own glacing y`know?

And I don't know if you said anything about the avatar, but you can tell the artist yourself [link]
I always get to hear good things about it, so I link it back to him

I did mix my own glaze, as well as designing the formula for it, the cobalt oxide is an ingredient of it though, and is expensive. Luckily, it is powerful, so only a tiny amount is necessary to get the desired color.

I left some comments for the artist. :)

Thank you, I am honored. :) I am afraid it is one of a kind though. If you read the artist comments, you will see that this is five different views of the same chalice. I did that because it is different from every angle, and I wanted to give a good feel for how it looks. It is always a bit hard to properly depict three-dimensional art here with photographs. I would love to be able to work on things like that still, even take commissions, but I no longer have access to a kiln, which prevents me from working further on my ceramics at this time.

Wow this is fantastic! I'm sad to say I never knew you liked ceramics... it's one of my loves, though I too do not have acess to a kiln anymore.

Yes, 3-D art is slautered by photography. Too bad about your lack of access to a kiln, i'd love to see more of your ceramics. :3
